The conclusion of the 14th annual SKUSA Super Nationals has brought several highlights for the team at J3 Competition. The notable successes of Patricio O’Ward taking the victory dance in the TaG Cadet category along with Leonardo Nienkotter’s victory showed good depth as the team took home two victories. Alongside these two victories the team fought hard in other categories by taking additional podium finishes thus proving J3 Competition.
The first category to take to the circuit was the young pilots using the Vortex Mini Rok in the TaG Cadet category. With four total drivers in the class the team was able to gain valuable data and progress through each session up to the final. With the correct setup and strategy in place young Patricio O’Ward put his number 6 Kosmic to the point and steadily went on to win by nearly two seconds. Teammate Clay Van Eerd put in a solid top twenty finish while newcomers Nicolas and Sebastian Alvarez finished further down the lineup gaining valuable experience.
Following the performance of O’Ward was the TaG Masters category whereby, J3 Competition had five driver’s entered and all were utlizing Vortex ROK TT engines. Once the green dropped in the final it was Aussie Kip Foster taking the commanding lead with his teammates in tow. After a difficult start, Nienkotter and McHattie began to settle in and dispose of their competitors on their move to front. At the checkered it was Foster, Nienkotter 1-2 with McHattie in fourth while fellow teammates Willis and Smith were 16th and 17th. After post-tech Nienkotter was advanced to the victory while McHattie along with Willis and Smith each took a one position advancement as well due to Fosters disqualification. This posted J3 Competition’s second win of the day and third total podium finish.
Looking for three in a row, the TaG Jr. category was next up with J3 Competition pilot Tristan DeGrand starting the final in fourth while teammates Alex Guenette started in 25th and Scott Foster in 34th. At the drop of the green J3 Competition would lose Canadian Alex Guenette to first lap contact while DeGrand was shuffled back a little yet kept working his way through the field. With time left DeGrand advanced back up to fourth place close to the lead pack and a lap latter DeGrand went on Olsen to secure third. Unfortunately Olsen thought otherwise of DeGrand’s clean pass and made contact with DeGrand on next corner forcing DeGrand further back. Settling back down, DeGrand advanced to a solid fourth place after his late race contact while teammate Foster advanced to 28th in the final rankings.
After a more than hectic set of heat races Travis Lowe lead the way for J3 Competition with enough points to classify him in fourth place while Joel Miller would be forced out in the LCQ after a rough set of heat races and Cory Cacciavillani would race his way solidly into Sunday’s final with good speed. During the final Lowe battled during the first 15 laps with the eventually winner and with some late race action would be forced back to a solid top ten finish in ninth. Putting a solid drive in his first Super Nationals as a senior, Cory Cacciavillani finished in the top twenty with a great drive against some of North America’s top drivers.
J3 Competition rounded out the weekend with KZ2 driver Matthew Wall who was subject to some bad luck in the highest quality KZ field in the world. Wall who showed good speed and hovered around the top fifteen for much of the event encountered some brutal starts which forced the Australian national champion to grid in 29th place. From here, Wall put in a solid effort as he advanced to 20th in the final rankings for a solid first Super Nationals outing.
At the conclusion of the event J3 Competition garnered two victories and four podiums along with some great runs by driver’s starting deep in the field. The team will know take its success from Las Vegas and move forward into the 2011 season on a good note as it looks to continually improve upon its Race Department.
