Unpredictable weather cicled the Mosport International Circuit this past weekend at hte Pan Am/ECKC Championship event providing J3 Competition Race Department multiple variables to overcome. Having to wrestle the changing weather conditions, J3 Competition was able to secure two solid podium finishes throughout the weekend proving a good set of results on international soil.
The event started out with the Micro Max category where J3 had team newcomer Michael d’Orlando aboard his Kosmic/AM Engines machine. On Saturday, d’Orlando would qualify in the top five and secure third place finish in the pre-final, which positioned him great for the final. With less than half a lap left in the final d’Orlando came under attack while running second place and would fall back to secure a fourth place finish. On Sunday, d’Orlando put all the pieces together as he qualified second and finished second in the pre-final while taking the track record en route. In Sunday’s final d’Orlando had a solid fight for the win as he took the lead briefly at the half way point before settling for a well-deserved second place finish.
Rotax Junior hosted well over thirty stout drivers with Alex Guenette showing the speed to compete for the top spot early on in the weekend. With mixed weather on Saturday, qualifying would not favor Guenette and the battling conditions forced him to end Sunday fight from a turn one incident. With favorable weather on Sunday, Guenette qualified in a solid third place and finished the pre-final in third with a lap time faster than the winner. The first lap of the final on Sunday looked like a repeat from Saturday as Guenette’s hopes were dashed after contact in the infield hairpin occurred while running third place. Alex will now begin training for his next important race at the Canadian Nationals in Mt. Tremblant, Quebec.
J3 Competition hosted drivers Tristan DeGrand and Andrew Palmer in the Rotax Sr. field throughout the weekend. On Saturday the Rotax Sr. field would be plagued with the ever changing weather, which started off in qualifying pushing both Palmer and DeGrand down the line. The pre-final proved positive as Palmer finished in fifth while DeGrand was collected in turn one. The final was mixed as most drivers went with slick tires as the one minute mark sounded, the rain came the conditions although excited were not desirable for nearly everyone. ON Sunday, the team marched forward and improved with constant conditions with Palmer taking a well-deserved podium finish in third place while DeGrand put his name in the mix as he came from deep in the field to take seventh place.
“The weekend was filled with a lot of excitement and intense competition, which gave our team and drivers another good opportunity”, stated Team Manager. “We’re looking to take this valuable experience and move forward as we have successfully done thus far in 2011.”
