J3 Competition stayed close to its headquarters this past weekend as it enjoyed the third round of the 2012 WKA Manufacturer’s Cup event held at Pitt International Race Complex. With several drivers’ representing the J3 Competition and Kosmic livery throughout the event, J3 Competition’s Race Department focused on a trio of young drivers including Theo Chick alongside Michael and Nicholas d’Orlando.
The Cadet and Rookie ranks typically showcase the fiercest and closest racing, which more than held its standard at PIRC.
When the clock stopped on Saturday’s Cadet qualifying, Michael d’Orlando took third quickest along with a top ten in Yamaha Sportsman. With a great performance in the Cadet pre-final d’Orlando looked poised for the final as he charged as high as third place, and ended a fierce battle in seventh. Teammate Theo Chick was in the heart of the mix ending the day with a solid fifteenth place finish. Michaels’ Yamaha Sportsman effort was thwarted by a mechanical issue as he and fellow Kosmic pilot Caleb Allison charged from 33rd and 34th into the top ten in the late stages of the race. Allison was rewarded with an admirable drive to ninth place while Nick Luedeke was in the fight all race long before he ended the day with a solid third place.
The heat turned up in Sunday’s action as team member Theo Chick began to assert himself as a threat amongst the Cadet field. Qualifying was witness to young Luedeke taking pole position on his Kosmic with Chick taking a top ten effort. The pre-final went positively as Luedeke took with the win while Chick battled through the top ten and d’Orlando came from last to mid-pack besting over fifteen drivers in his effort. The final was nothing less than stellar with d’Orlando coming from mid-pack to join the front five while Theo Chick moved with precision from his ninth place starting position to finish second by a mere .085 of a second in a marvelous effort. d’Orlando took the fourth step on the podium while Nick Luedeke would not be as fortunate as an on track altercation forced a DNF.
After ending Saturday with a solid ninth place finish, Nicholas d’Orlando battled through a tough qualifying round on Sunday, which forced him to take the grid in 24th for the pre-final. The pre-final saw the reemergence of the nine year old has he systematically picked off fourteen drivers to finish in tenth. With a great start in the final, d’Orlando pushed his Kosmic to one spot shy of the box with a sixth place finish in a great effort.
