J3 Competition’s Race Department is known for its international participation, whereby measureable results have always been a cornerstone. Whether the events be held by WSK, RGMMC, CIK/FIA the team has always shown the prowess of the American based team abroad. This characteristic was shown yet again this past weekend at the famed South Garda Karting Circuit in Lonato, Italy where the team entered its talented mini driver Luca Mars ended a solid outing with a fourth place finish in the final.
Leading up to the prestigious RoK International Final, the team entered this past weekend’s hotly contested Bridgestone Super Cup, a great tune up and introduction not only to the famed circuit but the challenging style of racing young Mars will encounter representing not only his team but country during this coming week’s event. Let’s not omit the fact that over 100 drivers were entered in the Mini RoK category at the Super Cup event.
With free practice starting on Thursday, Mars and the team had minimal track time prior to the timed qualifying on Friday. With the field being tightly compacted Mars was able to secure 52nd overall (out of 100+ drivers), which considering of the four groups of drivers, Mars was in group 1 whereby encountering considerably worse track conditions from the other groups, from here Mars would line up each heat in mid-pack making for a challenging set of heats.
Qualifying onward, Mars and the team worked in very aggressive fashion advancing in the heat races with 10-18-8 place finishes. Unfortunately a mishap in heat two relegated Mars to miss the main final by a mere 2 points. As forty (40) drivers went home early, Mars and the team prepared for Sunday’s South Garda GK final with Mars lining up in 11 position for the start. After making a small engine and chassis change for the final, Mars was on the charge wheeling his COMPKART Ranger28 to an impressive 4th place finish amongst a stout line up of drivers.
The team now takes a couple days off and begins the preparation for the anticipated ROK International Final (October 16-18). This event has been a spring board for drivers such as Sergeant, Corberi, Nielsen, just to name a few that have went on to be premier threats in the sport, which initated from their participation in RoK. Mars and the team will take to the track for free practice on October 15, follow J3 Competition/COMPKART social media platforms for up-to-date photos and results.
Team owner Jim Giacomelli had this to say after the first phase of the team’s trip to South Garda, “It was important to take part in the Super Cup to familiarize Luca with the competition and circuit. That was a successful step and we will now make a few adjustments for the upcoming RoK International final and look to carry our momentum forward again, it also must be noted that the strong logistical support from KCS Karting, our dealer in Northern Italy has been fantastic.”
