Today was mixed for the team at J3 Competition with the overall outcome positive. After three official practice sessions the team was fully prepared for the qualifying session that insued on during the afternoon.
The first team driver to take the track was round #1 winner and Championship leader, Tristan DeGrand. Once the checkered flag flew, DeGrand would be classified in fifth place, however, after post-race weigh in Tristan would gain a spot due to an unfortunate DQ of a fellow competitor. Starting fourth for all three heats tomorrow will challenging, but the team is confident that have made the necessary changes to gain speed and consistency out of the Kosmic Mercury. We must also note that Tristan is dealing with an ailing rib injury from his wreck in Genk, Belgium two weeks ago. The team has made several modifications to gain comfort for the young driver to battle for Sunday’s final win.
Last up was the KF2 class with three entries in the J3 Competition team only two would make the session, Shin Iguchi and Jeremy Nelson. Benitez would be forced to miss the session due to an altercation during the last practice session (He will be back for Saturday). Once on track, Iguchi and Nelson were up to speed and challenging for the pole position, however, the team came up short with Iguchi taking a close second and Nelson fifth. The field in KF2 is very close and on such a long track (1:06..) the gap is relatively slim, both these drivers will face good opportunities during Saturday’s heats.
“I’m very happy so far with how the team is adapting to the circumstances here in New Jersey and of course we still have two more days. The track is very challenging as everyone is searching grip and the many chicanes are forcing and enormous amount of load on the driver’s bodies, which is something we usually don’t see. Therefore, we have been forced to create solutions, which we normally would not have to. ” – Justin Stefani
