Location: Mooresville, NC (USA)
Event: WKA Grand Nationals
The team at COMPKART took a split squad for one last events prior to the Superkarts! USA Super Nationals, which was the WKA Grand Nationals held at GoPro Motorplex in Mooresville, NC. With tricky weather conditions the team started off on its heels as practice was all but canceled due to record setting rain fall on Friday thus giving no track time to the team.
Saturday race day was the team’s first time on track and qualifying was the first dry session the team would see. A fair effort in qualifying by all three drivers proved enough for the team to race through its heat races and eventual Final. New team member Alex Bertagnoli took fifth place in the x30 Sr. final while battling through a couple engine issue and fellow teammate Lane Vacala made a strong run in the final after a difficult set of heat races to finish in seventh in X30 Sr.
Sunday proved better weather and with the team isolating its engine issues from Saturday it was down to business. In qualifying Bertagnoli was unable to show his full potential with slower traffic being the culprit, however he emerged with fourth place in the pre-final to position himself well for the final. The team went to work to provide a winning package for the final and Bertagnoli settled in and drove a patient final biding his time as in the late stages he began to click off the quickest laps of the event and capitalized on the last lap to take the lead and subsequent win. With the event being a two final system, Bertagnoli and COMPKART also took the overall win for the weekend in X30 Sr. showing the team is already up to speed.
Unfortunately Benoit and Vacala were unable to maximize their potential during the weekend, however both drivers will be ready in two weeks time for the Super Nationals in Las Vegas, NV (USA).
“Overall the event proved that in tricky conditions our process is working and to be able to introduce Alex in his first event and come away with a win and overall win is positive. Its still a bit of a question mark on the missing results byBenoit and Vacala as both proved very fast at this circuit earlier in the season. In the end we have gained the data and experience we were after and we are already focused on Vegas and the work ahead.” — Management
